arthritic foot care

Arthritis in the great toe joint may be due to osteoarthritis ("wear and tear"), with the cartilage wearing out and the joint can get to "bone on bone".  We have a non-surgical treatment option that involves hyaluronic acid injections to provide cushioning into the joint, relieving the pain in the great toe joint.  We inject the great toe joint with hyaluronic acid three times, three months apart, and the pain relief can last from 9 months to over 1 1/2 years, depending on the severity of the condition.  Many patients choose this option when they are not ready to undergo surgery.  We also offer custom orthotics that has special padding to reduce the pain in the great toe joint.  If the pain is constant and not relieved with non-surgical measures, we do surgical treatment of hallux rigidus with the Futura Great Toe Joint Implant (we do not fuse the great toe joint).    If you have pain in your great toe joint due to osteoarthritis, schedule an appointment to discuss your treatment options.
